A Scientific Report Rekindles the Controversy over Energy Drinks in France

Emily Amat Lise Rihouey-Robini

On October 1st, 2013, the French food safety and environment agency (ANSES) published a report demonstrating its concern about the safety of Energy Drinks. The study demonstrates that energy drinks have deleterious cardiovascular and psychological effects. ANSES considers that reported strokes concerned presumably genetically predisposed individuals, and occurred when the drinks were combined with additional risk factors such as physical activity, alcohol, medication, or an individual sensitivity to caffeine. However, the other cardiovascular and psychological effects observed by ANSES resemble classic adverse reactions to high caffeine intake.
