European Union: The EU African Swine Fever Crisis and its Impact on International Trade

Francesco Montanari, Cesare Varallo

African Swine Fever (hereinafter ‘ASF’) is a highly infectious animal disease that, although bearing no risk for humans, is extremely harmful to pigs and wild boars. Normally, it triggers symptoms such as loss of appetite, high fever, haemorrhages in the skin and internal organs, ultimately leading the animal to death within 2-10 days. Presently, no vaccine or treatment exists.
