Denmark: Will Listeria Outbreak Mean Tightened Food Controls?

Tanja Buch-Weeke

Throughout most of the world the official food control in Denmark is considered highly efficient, thorough and reliable. With 1675 employees (in 2012), the Danish Food and Veterinary Administration (DFVA) is large in relation to the number of food business (about 50.000) that it inspects. The DFVA contributes about 200 times a year to the EU rapid alert system for food and feed. Most of the recalls concern minor infringements of food legislation. The DFVA publishes all recalls on its website. In a normal August week, products like rice pudding (cause: weevils) and salami (cause: fermentation) were recalled, however, one of the May recalls 2014 concerned a serious health risk. A deli meat producer recalled products due to a high level of listeria.
