Role of Food Quality Standards for Market Entry: the Case of EU Agricultural Market

Kateryna Zelenska

Legal approximation to the European agricultural regulation may be an efficient instrument to augment additional value for Ukrainian exports and to ensure EU market entry for agricultural products originating from Ukraine. One of the main prerequisites to achieve this objective should be food quality improvement. Taking into account the specific commitments established by the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, it may be alleged that this strategy could be efficiently promoted in the course of the treaty implementation. To lessen the possible impact of food standards on agricultural trade, Ukraine may use a mixture of instruments to improve its market position in these areas, primarily trade negotiations, dispute settlement within the WTO, legal approximation to best practice, as well as domestic support for meeting agricultural standards.
