Poland ∙ Excise Stamps as a Legal Issue in the Polish Wine Market

Jakub M. Doliński

In 2010, Poles drank 97 million litres of wine, while in 2016 consumption stood at 107 litres of wine. In 2015, Polish wine imports amounted to $237 million (212 million), which confirmed Poland as the largest wine importer in central Europe. Whereas 62.9% of total Polish wine imports is controlled by producers from Western Europe and 13.3% from South America (with distinctive supremacy of Chile), all of the importers are facing a problem with Polish excise stamps. Poland is one of the last European countries where excise stamps are still a valid requirement for alcohol importers. Few important legal issues that concern them are presently implemented to the Polish Wine Act.
