The Blockchain Technology and the Regulation of Traceability: The Digitization of Food Quality and Safety

Isabel Hernández San Juan

The blockhain technique, originally used for cryptocurrency management, seems to be as useful as it is effective for controlling the agro-food supply chain. From my perspective as a lawyer, I have consulted numerous articles without understanding its use beyond improving food traceability. In this context, I have recommended the publication of the following article by Isabel Hernández San Juan which, due to its clarity and direct ethos, I believe it will allow us to clarify many doubts about this new technology applicable from production (including agriculture) to food consumption. As a matter of fact, the European Food Safety and Quality System has economic, political, legal and social impacts. Traceability in the European Union Food Law is defined as the ability to trace and follow a food, feed, food producing animal or substance intended to be, or expected to be incorporated into a food or feed, through all stage of production, processing and distribution. Will the use of blockchain technology help and offer better traceability in the food chain? - Luis González Vaqué
