Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling - Legitimacy of Using the Nutri-Score System in EU Member States

Dario Dongo

Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL) has been extensively tested in several EU member states over the last decade to help consumers choose foods with balanced nutritional profiles within each product category, and to reduce the impact of obesity and overweight-related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The NutriScore system, which has been formally adopted by several EU member states as the official scheme to be applied in the FOPNL, is part of the voluntary information required by the Food Information Regulation. Its use on foodstuffs produced and/or marketed in other member states must be considered legitimate - as consumers are informed about its meaning in a language they understand - in compliance with the principle of free movement of goods. And it should be encouraged, hoping that such a tool may contribute towards mitigating the prevalence of non-communicable diseases in the European population, consistently with WHO guidelines and IARC (International Agency for the Research on Cancer) suggestions, among others.
