Food Labelling Challenges – Lessons Learnt from the Sunflower Oil Crisis due to the War in Ukraine

Mariia Derechina and Joanna Krakowiak

This article provides an overview of the local emergency measures taken by some EU member states to provide labelling flexibility in response to the global shortage of sunflower oil due to the war in Ukraine. The research findings might be useful for summarizing the experience of dealing with a supply chain crisis in internal markets of EU member states and for the purpose of developing prospective harmonized provisions with regard to labelling flexibility at the level of EU food legislation in times of various types of crisis (e.g. due to the pandemic, the war or severe natural disasters) that are needed to ensure continuation of supplies of food and drink as well as to uphold the production capacity and economic viability of the food sector.
