Following the entry into force of the new Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, European consumers can benefit of a broader choice of food and a more favorable environment for Europe's agri-food industry - the second largest employment sector in Europe - while still maintaining a high level of food safety. This article aims to provide an overview on the current stage of development with regard to insects as novel food with a specific focus on the reasons why entomophagy may be a valid and sustainable food choice, both for the health of each individual person as well as for the environmental reasons.
